Terralec are proud to have been involved in the complete sound and lighting install at the newly opened Rollacity skate centre in Essex. Rollacity is Essex newest skating rink and offers a whole host of weekly events including skate discos, private lessons and open skate sessions.
With a modern building to fit out and a desire to offer the best in customer experience, Rollacity selected Terralec as the sole supplier and installer for all of its sound, lighting and DJ equipment. Experts in this field, Terralec consulted carefully with the management at Rollacity and come up with a complete audio and lighting system that would deliver crystal clear sound, interesting light effects but importantly remain easy to maintain and operate on a day to day basis.
LED disco lighting was selected for the complete install. Not only does LED lighting offer much lower running costs it also generates a lot less heat, so was ideal for an install where there would be a lot of activity such as skating. In addition LED disco lights require very little maintenance in comparison to old conventional types, making the lighting system both more reliable and easier to maintain for the management team.
A range of different light effects were installed to give varying and interesting light shows. These included the JB systems Sirus and JB Victory scanner, both of which use 60 watt LED's so offer optimum brightness. Over 100 metres of LED strip were installed around the skating area which means a range of colours can be selected and set to create different moods for different events in this area. Additional LED lights and laser effects were then added to create the ultimate lighting system.
All of the effects lighting is controlled via the installed easy to use Sweetlight computer software. This enables the management to recall pre-programmed shows at a touch of a button, again making the day to day running as straight forward as possible.
The overall sound was just as important as the lighting. Terralec carefully considered the acoustics of the building before recommending a complete audio system, which would offer the best in audio output and reliability for this busy centre. A total of 24 Omnitronic PAS208 speakers, 2 Cobra CFR12 and 2 CFR15B loudspeaker units were installed, providing unbeatable clarity and punch, suitable for all types of music.
Final touches were put to the install with the addition of JB systems BPM6-USB mixers and USB22 CD players. These are ideal for the modern DJ, offering inputs for MP3 CDs, USB sticks or even external hard drives.
Terralec are delighted to have been involved in this recent project and after a lot of hard work it is good to see Rollacity up and running at full spec. Best of all, Rollacity showcase some of the best DJ and club lighting in the Essex area, putting them miles ahead of many local clubs!

Terralec specialise in supplying and installing sound and lighting equipment for schools, theatres and entertainment venues. Recently we completed a complex installation for the new International School of Aberdeen, incorporating a large main theatre, black box theatre, band, drama and music rooms.
Terralec were involved in an earlier installation at the old school and were asked back, initially as consultants and then as the main contractor for the sound and lighting equipment. Early on in the design process, it was decided to use LED lighting where possible, resulting in seamless colour changing and much reduced power consumption.
All the the main stage lighting and curtains can be dropped to floor level on bespoke Doughty hoists. This allows students and technicians to adjust and change lighting arrangements without working at high level. All the curtains can be independently operated, allowing for curtains to be replaced by scenery drops or other effects and then electrically winched out of the way.
The theatre lighting is DMX operated from a Compulite desk in the main control room with Cobra, Selecon and BriteQ luminaries providing the light. Any dimmers were mounted near the fittings, to reduce cabling, with most of the power wiring concealed in pre-wired bars, making a neat installation.
A large multi-channel sound system is also included in the main auditorium with 12 channels of Trantec radio microphone, a 36 channel desk, large JB Systems amplifier rack and Proel main speakers. The final remit for the project included facilities for single person presentations or full stage musical productions, so there are plenty of audio facilities for every scenario.
Away from the main auditorium, the black box theatre presented an opportunity for a free thinking theatre. A clear floor space was essential, so impromptu floor props could be used, so most of the lighting was fitted to a square rig that could be lowered to the floor. All the controls were moved to a balcony position, maintaining the open floor space. Once again most of the fittings were Cobra LED floods and spots with very low heat radiation and power consumption.
The are three other rooms in daily use by the school, the band, music and drama room. All the rooms have the same mobile sound reinforcement system with facilities to multi-record and play back from a number of music sources. Keeping all the units the same makes it possible to share technical expertise between staff and students.
The Drama room also includes a small lighting rig and in keeping with all the other lighting system in the school, it can be dropped on a Doughty winch to floor level.
The Terralec team felt privileged to work on this project. The school now has some of the best facilities for drama and music students in the UK, and the excellent teaching team at the school now have all the tools they need to create stunning drama and music productions.
